assumes that your house smells like burning? I have read the instructions before using it and all he said was to wash before first use, which unfortunately did not. I checked my food a little later and the carpet smelled bad, like I was on fire. A little smoke was also coming from the oven. Is that normal? Is it going to smell like that, even after washing? It is a KitchenAid.
Eww. I have a couple of Silpat baking mats, and do not smell when I bake with them. Of course, I did wash them well before use. I do not know what brand is, but the smell and the smoke may be due some residue left on the carpet during the manufacturing process. I wash them and try again. If you get the same result, because that would definitely return is not normal.
